Cead Mile Failte!One Hundred Thousand Welcomes from the Donegal Association.The first meeting of the organization was held on Wednesday, April 29, 1981, 8:30 p.m. at the Knusman V.F.W. Hall, 5621 West Irving Park Road, Chicago, Illinois. Tony Gallagher, acting as Chairman, called the meeting to order and advised that the purpose of the meeting was to officially organize the association and elect officers. Rev. Brian Gallagher opened the meeting with a prayer and a brief explanation of the purpose of forming the organization as a vehicle by which Donegal people could get together and enjoy social functions. ...Nominations were accepted for the position of Nomination Chairman to preside over the nominations. Michael Maloney was elected and took the chair. ...and the note was taken to elect the following officers: Pres: Anthony Gallagher, Vice Pres: Danny O'Donnell, Treas: Frank Bradley, Asst. Treas: Joseph Duffy, Sec: Kathleen Boyle, Trustees:Michael Boyle, Eugene Doherty, Michael Maloney, Patrick McShane, and Daniel O'Donnell. Tony Gallagher, as the new Chairman, took the chair and stated that the next item on the Agenda should be a vote on the official name of the organization. Several nominations were received: The Donegal Association, The Donegal Club, Friends of Donegal, St. Columkill Club, Tir Connell Club. After discussion and vote, the name "The Donegal Association" was chosen... ...it was agreed that the purpose of the organization would be social, sponsoring monthly meetings/socials, an annual dinner dance, Christmas Party and an annual picnic, and that membership would not be limited to Donegal people only...that there would be no socials during the summer months, and that a central meeting location would be sought, possibly in the Hillside area. ...it was agreed that for this year the dues would be $15 per year per individual or couple. Since several people had already paid in $10, everyone was requested to pay in the additional $5.00...There would have to be a $5.00 per individual/couple charge for all future meetings...to cover the cost of the hall and refreshments. The Chairman suggested that all of the officers, trustees and any interested members meet at his house on Friday, May 8th, to prepare the By-laws, establish procedures, etc. After the By-laws are set, the Secretary will file the incorporation documents with the State of Illinois... The secretary requested that all members turn in the names and addresses of any prospective members for addition to the mailing list. The Chairman then called for a motion to adjourn. The motion being made and then seconded, the meeting was adjourned.
